I have a positive and probably idealistic view of Great Britain because of my education: I believed that Britain is “a green and pleasant land” as a reference to William Blake’s poems. A green country but obviously a rainy country where people drink tea or beer no matter what time it is.
Also, I do love France, another country of great culture with a strong “art de vivre” although the welcome conditions (courtesy and daily life conveniences…) are blunted somewhat. A country of lovely smelly cheese and delightful wine.

I grew up in a bi-cultural environment; I studied Shakespeare and could sing traditional English nursery rhymes. But I also studied Zola and knew by heart the lyrics of Frère Jacques. Can I say that I am more used to the English ways than the French ones? Well to be honest I do not know whether I am a British citizen or a French citizen. Having thought about it, I would say I am French in the UK and I am British in France. Well, take it for granted it that I am European.
I don’t reject any of my roots. They are parts and parcels of my identity. I differ from other English people in several ways : I cannot give up French cuisine nor having my cheese before my desert. I gather all my beloved around a table to share a good meal, last but not least, I do not react like a typical English person when it comes to emotions: I am not afraid of showing my feelings contrary to the English who have a reputation for keeping a “stiff upper lip” (garder leur flegme). It is a well known fact that most English people are reluctant to express their feelings. (although the behaviour of some English people during football matches makes you wonder…).
Does it mean I am French, no! I support English teams during matches or competitions, I queue everywhere I go even take the bus in Paris, I really do not mind wearing ridiculous bright colours and I love having after-work drinks in a local pub and enjoying a great fellowship moment.
This blog will give you an idea of what it is to be British on one day and French another day!
I really hope you will enjoy reading it!
